Hoover High School American Cancer Society Youth: 2008

Mission Statement

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a non-profit organization which seeks to eliminate cancer through research, advocacy, education, and service. The American Cancer Society Youth (ACSY) is a group of dedicated students who work towards raising awareness and healing the emotional scars that mar those who have encountered cancer in their lifetime. At the Hoover High School chapter of ACSY, we understand that cancer affects everyone. It is as much the pain of bystanders, the ones who must watch their loved ones suffer, as it is of those who are diagnosed with the disease. The ACSY not only participates in various ACS fundraisers and events such as the annual Relay for Life in Glendale, but also works with support groups such as Camp Korets and Kesem, a summer camp which brings hope into the lives the children whose parents have or had cancer.

Relay for Life '08

Thanks to everyone for making this year's relay so memorable. We were able to raise over $6,000!

I hope that everyone was able to take away more than just community service hours from this experience and keep the message of hope alive.

Seniors, I hope you'll continue to "Relay" no matter where you go and especially if you stay near Glendale. Non-seniors, you guys are lucky to be able to undergo this experience at least one more time as high school students. What more of an excuse do you need than to stay up all night with your friends, right? Even if everyone went to school the next day exhausted, sore all over, coughing, and sneezing, you have to admit that it's a great memory to have of your high school days.

One word.

SMORES.

Relay for Life Documents

So, I've uploaded all the documents we passed out at the meeting today. Just to the left underneath "Relay Documents Download." Just open each link, save picture to file and print.

Step by Step on how to join:
Click Join a Team - Search Team Name: Hoover High Tornadoes -Click one of the teams -Join our Team - Select Participation type: Team Registered Offline (Free)... everything else is easy enough.

You MUST JOIN A TEAM.

Also, do not forget the minimum $30 fundraising requirement. Also, unless you decide to bring your own lunch or starve, bring $17 for the meals.

If you guys have any questions, just post them here with your name.

Updates

Sorry to have moved the site but it wasn't working very well for me, so here's the temporary site until I can find a better one.

I'll be keeping this page filled with updates about ACSY. So far, there really aren't any, but Relay for Life is set for September 27th so start getting your sleeping bags ready folks.

From the Founder

Dear Visitor,

Cancer, like most diseases, can victimize a patient and their family. However, unlike most diseases, cancer effects more lives in a year and has affected more communities across the United States than any recent epidemic.

The American Cancer Society Youth (ACSY) was founded at Hoover High School to introduce students to community work through the American Cancer Society (ACS) and help community members overcome the plight of cancer. We heavily rely upon donations from our community and the work done by the student body of Hoover High School to accomplish our mission of community support toward a cancer free world.

As founder of ACSY at Hoover, I have faced the effects cancer had on my family. When my uncle passed away from cancer four months after my grandfather had passed away from cancer, I had no one to turn to. Each member of my family was affected by the ordeal and was mourning the loss on their own. I did not know how to heal on my own.

After four years of grief, I joined the American Cancer Society and its efforts to raise funds at the Relay for Life. These funds go toward cancer research, programs for patients and their families, and scholarships for young survivors.

After pouring all my energy into organizing a team for Hoover High School in this event, the day of the relay I found a group of students I could turn to and help to overcome the effect this disease has had on us and our families.

Since then, every year our numbers grow. More students join our efforts and more money is raised for ACS. I am very proud of all the students who have been a part of ACSY and the leaders who have made all the community work possible.
I encourage all the students of Hoover High School to join ACSY and experience the profound feeling of giving back.
